PAF Intellect'14

Coming back from LUMUN, I logged onto my fb account and was surprised to see the launch of an event, PAF Intellect. Out of nowhere, our science society had decided to host an Olympiad.
18 January seemed too short a window for organizing a mega event. A hundred questions came to mind related to as to how the event would be held and I will be honest, I had my reservations.
Fast forward to 18 January. Upon reaching the school , I was pleasantly surprised to see the numerous delegations waiting. Delighted to see that the hardwork of marketing department had paid off, I was excited to see how the event would unfold.
The surprises were to continue. Firstly, the events that had been selected deserved a praise. The six events that were  Investigar la Infección, Eulermathecia, Invention Galore, Aerodinámica, Science Quidditch and last but not least, Mecanno Minds thoroughly tested the understanding of scientific concepts and intelligence possessed by the participants ensuring that a high academic standard was maintained.
Witnessing the great minds of tomorrow at work and team spirit in action, I felt proud to be a Pafian. Proud to be part of the team that had defied all odds and ensured that not only the event happened, it was a great success.
The highlight of the event was surely, Aerodynamics where water-rockets were prepared and launched. This competition attracted so much attention that other events had to be delayed as all the participants gathered around to watch this fascinating event.
Gathering teams from all over Karachi, ensuring that they went satisfied and concluding a mega-event is no easy task, and I take my hat of in respect for the Science Society Secretariat, the brains behind the operation, Sarmad Pirzada, Rahim Rasool and Misha Aftab Khan.

Not Goodbye Miss Bushra, not just yet.

Throughout our lives, we meet people on a daily basis. Some of them become a close part of us, others just come and go. At The City School PAF Chapter A-levels section, we are a family. Each of us plays an important role as a family member with their own duties to fulfill. We fight, laugh, cry, joke around and argue like any normal family does. When one member of this family decides to leave and walk away, that is what strikes us. The harsh reality of life which goes on no matter how things are. Bushra Siddique, is one of those members of our PAF Family, who act like the backbone, keeping everything in place and getting everyone to do their jobs right. But now, this very important person is leaving her family to walk out into the world of strangers.

I remember the first ever time I spoke to her. 'Miss, I wanna get a scholarship for university', is what I said to her. She looked at me, gave me her signature 'Yeah, sure' look, and asked me for my name. From that day forth, there was not a single day spent at school, when I didn't tell my friends, 'Let's go to the counselor's office'. Merely because of the fact, that this lady's bright, happy face, could make any sort of distress go away. Every time I got told off by my teachers, or had a fight with any of my friends, the first person I'd go to would be her. She'd ask me to sit down, offer me biscuits and then laugh about some completely off topic subject. That is one thing I will miss about her oh so much.

NOT to be forget the way she gives the best advice in the world. From academics, to personal problems, Miss Bushra knows how to handle everything. Her honesty, and straight-forwardness makes her exemplary. Her dedication towards her students' well being and prosperity make her the best counselor one can ever have. I wouldn't be wrong if I say I am very jealous of the people in Dubai who have snatched our Miss Bushra away from us.

During the elections last year, she calmed me down every time I had a melt down. She's seen me cry, motivated me to move forward no matter what tries bringing me down and made sure I give my 100% to anything I do (still trying miss). She has been the force behind us all. Knowing that we are bidding farewell to her way before we have our own is heart breaking. Not only did she miss out on our Welcome, she will miss out on our Farewell as well. Honestly that sadden's me more. Who will give me my super inspirational title now?

No matter where you go, what you do, you will always be in each and everyone's heart Miss B. We wish you all the success and happiness in life. We hope that Allah blesses you abundantly at every step you take towards progressing further and being the extraordinary woman that you are. You are an inspirational for all those girls who think they can not achieve their aims, by the Grace of Allah you keep getting more and more, which not only makes us happy but also makes us extremely proud of the fact that we were under the guidance of a lady like you. You are more than just a teacher or a career's counselor, you are a sister to all of us. And like I said today, Amazing, is Miss Bushra. And this is not a good bye. We shall meet again. So that you can be proud, that you raised us up to be who we become.

We will Miss you a lot.
Loads of Love.

CARMA-V

By: Raja moini

When we first landed in Lahore, all anyone could think of was how cold it was going to be outside.  We grabbed our luggage and headed towards the gates wanting desperately to take a whiff of that cold Lahori air. I can recall it all happening. Infact, for some odd reason, in my mind, it always happens in slow motion. Getting our suitcases, running to the gates of the airport, stepping outside AAAAAND, well, that’s it really. We just stood there waiting for the intense cold to hit us any second, but… it didn’t. The weather was ‘pleasant’ and that was definitely NOT what us Karachi walay were expecting of Lahore. Little did we know how badly we’d be proved wrong that night.

I believe introductions to our made to win, beyond awesome teams are in order before I proceed any further.  Starting off with the star team of PAF Chapter, Team A, we had the incredible photographer Faizan Alamgir (better known as Jalebi to over half the school), the amazingly expressionless Hamza Mandviwala, the extremely hospitable Shayan Baig, the quiet Haniya Ahmed, the sweetheart Maria Imran and of course, Aamna Aziz, who scares me a little (read: A LOT).

Coming to Team B, the extremely homesick (but nonetheless awesome) Amna Khan, Sundus Qureshi (who can apparently sing REALLY REALLY well), the intelligent Maheen Ahmed, Waleed Ghani (who takes really awesome pictures as well), the beautiful Bazigha Hudda and myself. Last but most definitely not the least, Team C. There was the most incredible senior ever, Marium Tariq, the coolest A2 Huda Raza, Afif Ather, who I heard talking only TWICE (yes, I counted), the awesome (I’m running out of adjectives) Moiz Khan, the amazing future RJ Rushna Burney and finally, the person who proved to me that the best things really do come in small packages, Maheen Arif.

Our first adventure in Lahore was at the famous Joyland. As we stepped out of the car at night, the true Lahori winter slapped us in the face (really really hard). Stepping into the park, we ran to the scariest ride we saw. After being whirled in every direction imaginable and being inches away from going ker-splat on the ground  I can confidently say that that is the closest I, and I’m pretty sure everyone else on that ride (judging by the level of screaming I could hear) has never been closer to death. And of course, like any successful trip to the amusement park, there was throwing up (and we were lucky enough to catch it on tape). Coming back, Faizan made us all walk choo choo train style to make sure none of us got lost, and as is apparent, none of us did.

Entering LUMS, us CARMA first-timers were awestruck. Calling the campus big would be an understatement. Gigantic suits it better. It was beautiful; with trees everywhere and the red bricked building reminding me a little of school back home. Lugging our suitcases inside the gates, little did we know that what we saw was just the tip of the iceberg. With those moronic, tourist type grins spread across our faces we tried making our way to the dorms.  That is when we came to realize the sheer enormity and brilliance of the campus. It was a city within a city. And a beautiful one as a matter of fact.
After settling into our dorms, we made our way to the first (and probably the most exciting) event of the day. The shootout. Let me tell you this, we do not give our news reporters enough credit. After being pushed, trampled on and almost crushed to death in a stampede of pretend news reporters eager to get footage of a pretend protest, all the news channels out there have gained my unconditional respect. We spent the night exploring the campus, enjoying the bonfire at the carnival arranged for the delegates and relaxing at one of the hip cafes at LUMS.

Came day 2 and we all geared up for the chilly weather outside wearing nothing less than three layers of clothing (in my case, four) and still shivering all the way to wherever we needed to go. It was a day well spent with phase two of the shootout and other journalism events all taking place. Finally, the night we’d all been waiting for came. The concert. The opening act, Abdullah Qureshi had the girls screaming their lungs out, including myself, even though I had never seen or heard of the man in my life, but, oh well, I have no regrets because  the amazing songs later had me singing along anyway. After making us wait for quite some time in the freezing cold, the main act of the night, lead singer of one of Pakistan’s most celebrated pop bands; Farhan Saeed came to treat our ears to old favorites. The awesome music, cold as ever weather and of course, our team members crazy (literally crazy) dance moves made it a night impossible to forget.
Day 3 arrived and getting lost in the huge campus became routine. Severely sleep deprived and running purely on caffeine, we prepared ourselves for Anchor IT. Pretending to be a real life news anchor was definitely on my bucket list, and no matter how horrible I was, a dream came true that day. With the print pandemonium (a magazine each team had to create regarding CARMA V) deadline and shootout submissions the next day, everybody started going slightly, if not completely, loopy.  Everyone frantically put together whatever little footage and write-ups they had managed to get and added final touches to their videos.

Day 3 also happened to be the day for the Voicebox. The radio event at CARMA in which our teams did an amazing job getting praise from everyone, the competition included and although we did not bag the award, we had our heads held high, proud of our very own radio jockeys.

Day 4 arrived and it dawned upon us that the end to our adventure was coming close. We woke up to the shouting of the student volunteers telling us to pack up and empty the dorms A.S.A.P. as they had delegates for their next event coming in. Mustering whatever little energy we had in us, we threw all our belongings in our suitcases and dragged them out in the hallway and to be honest, I almost fell asleep on mine. We headed out of the dorms with our bags and looked back wondering when, if ever, we’d come back.

Came the closing ceremony and we celebrated as one of our teams was awarded second place at the shootout. Although we did not win many awards, we gained an experience that was definitely more valuable than gold. Walking out of LUMS, we were happy and sad at the same time. Happy because we had made some great memories that would last a lifetime, and sad because our journey had finally come to an end.
Our last day in Lahore was an adventure all on its own. Having no car to go anywhere far out in the city, we decided to walk to the nearby Hardees in Lahore’s famous Y- Block. We left the house (provided to us by the extremely generous Shayan Baig) and started walking towards the restaurant, having only Hamza’s trusted GPRS to guide us. Stealing baby oranges hanging from a tree in someones garden on the way and almost getting chased by the chowkidaar of the house, playing an awesome game of ding dong ditch and having one last meal together before heading back to Karachi, it was a day I’ll always remember.

Incredible, crazy, exciting and just plain unforgettable (for all the right reasons). That is what describes LUMS CARMA V for us in the best way. It was a roller coaster ride we will remember for the rest of our lives. Winning is not what it’s all about, and CARMA has taught us that better than anything else. We faced our fears, experienced life in a different way, laughed till our lungs were on the verge of giving out but best of all, we went as friends, strangers even, but came back as family and nothing less than that. It’s not the destination that matters most, it’s the journey. And this journey was the best of our lives.

A Page from Jannat's diary

Dear Diary, It was another ordinary day at Dow University Of Health Sciences. ORDINARY! I have never used this word during my 6 years at PAF CHAPTER. Is there something wrong with me? Or is it just because I miss that place, my second home. Home? No, it was more than just home.

A place which always brought a smile to all our faces. That amazing smell of french fries which could brighten up anyone's mood! Those stupid fights every single day to get a seat on the bus on our way back home. Morning walks in that big ground. Chit chatting and bunking in the corridors. Hiding from teachers, whose classes you were planning to bunk. And how can I forget Miss Hilla and her shades. The way she kept an eye on us all!

A day at chapter without being hit by a football, basketball or a volleyball? IMPOSSIBLE! Running away from Miss Shireen? IMPOSSIBLE! Trying to convince Miss Hilla to return your cell phone? IMPOSSIBE! Miss Shazia not noticing you taking out your phone from your pocket? IMPOSSIBLE Bunking Dr Husnain's class and not getting caught? IMPOSSIBLE. And the list of impossibilities goes on.

There was something unique about every individual at chapter. The peons who tried to save you from being scolded. Dr Husnain, who will make you stand on the window and attend the lecture if you arrive late. Sir Sohail Raza teaching you more Islamiat than Chemistry and telling you that biryani has carcinogenic food colour (no sir it stiill did not stop me from eating it every day ). Oh and last but the best part about chapter, Miss Bushra and the counselor's office. Our so called 'drawing room'. Koi b masla ho, bhai Miss Bushra kahan hai? Koi b kaam karana ho, yar Miss Naureen ke pass chalo. FB use karna hai yar? Counselor's office chalo. Free ka nashyta karna hai? Counselor's office hai na!

God! There is no such place like CHAPTER and even though today, I am where I always dreamt myself to be, at DUHS, I still would give up everything to go back to that magical place where my memories live. That place which made me the person I am today
Dear diary,
Do you know any magic spell that can take me back in time?
Sigh

Trust

By: Mehak Saleem

You could break all the mirrors you want, all the picture frames, all the crockery you’ve got just when one thing breaks. Trust – a simple word consisting of five letters. You wouldn’t actually know the emotions concerning this word, not unless you’ve actually felt it. The sort of pain that arises within your whole body crumbles your heart making you suffocate. The amount of oxygen supplied by your red blood cells seems not to be enough for you to be conscious. Yes, it does hurt. It does hurt a lot! The heart aches with sorrow and regret.

As devastating as it is, the more has it hit me. They’re uncountable instances when I have been the target of betrayal. Unable to realize myself how the possible outcomes to get deceived are so many, the worst part is it happened every single time whenever I tried not to be made a fool out off. After which, either those trouble makers apologize or they roam about carrying a pride of what they’ve done. You call them your best friend but soon realize that you were used. You trust them, they crush it. It's done best by the person closest to your heart. At that moment, it's intolerable.

One of such instances just happened last night. It left me ripped. Many times have I sat in one corner, crying my heart out and praying for my life to get better. However, I didn’t let it rule over my life. I picked myself up and ironed all those creases, life’s just too short for all of this. Making myself realize that life goes on, I got hold of my miserable feelings and decided to move on.

A tear is a man’s indication of weakness. I regret crying on those worst occasions. People come and go. You can’t change it, despite of millions of effort. You break a vase; it separates itself into so many pieces, each different from the other. You sit all day trying to fit in all the pieces together with glue or tape, but a few hours later, it will break again at this time it will break into even smaller pieces. Similar is our heart, it’s best to clean out the mess ourselves. Clean out the trash and feel blessed that things got sorted out before they could have gotten any worse. Believe that whatever happens is for the best. Allah is Merciful. He protects us from the worst pains and sufferings.

Today, let us promise ourselves, we will be strong. We won’t let anyone get hold of our weakness. We will work to turn our weaknesses into strengths. Also, we will not break anyone’s trust making them a victim of heartache and be a person of kindness for all.

It is all about Love.

By: Sadaf Tabani

In the end, it's all about Love!

They say, love hurts; but may be its just that they have fallen for the wrong person. Love is a power that can defeat all others. It's an ocean that can drown people into it. It's a bond that connects the souls with one spirit. It's a source of eternal bliss and joy but only when it's true!

Yes, it is true love!

It's completely magical.

It can bewitch you, or make you cry, it will give you pain, and in the end it'll also be the reason to cast a huge stupid yet beautiful smile on your perfect face and know it will be all okay.

So many people out there with 'small brains' always assume that love is a so-called drama associated with a guy and a girl, but I feel dismayed over their minute vision.

Love is when you were born and you caught hold of your mother's finger. Love is when your dad is spoiling you. Love is when our parents strive hard to give us luxuries of life and good education, yet there are so many children out their complaining that their parents don't give them time!

Trust me, it's ALRIGHT! And it doesn't mean that they don't love us! It's just that we can't understand them and love is there. If it might not be there in words, it’s still there in their hearts we just need to go deep and feel it.

Love is when our friends eat all our lunch at the school canteen. Love is when our teachers scold us when we don't work hard and when they give us a free unit. Love is when our Principal appreciates us and encourages us to strive for more.

Love is when our best friends tease us for all our secrets. Love is when a guy respects a girl and wants to make her a part of his future.

And the most perfect example of love is God Himself. He created us, blessed us and is always there for us. We just got to take time out of our busy schedule and thank Him for everything wonderful and everything not so in our lives.

And indeed it is said: "When things are going rough, Pray! When things are going great, Pray!

This life is a trial and the victorious will be the ones who stay loyal to their Lord through all the thick and thin times of life. We are all imperfect and that's where the perfection is hidden. Grab opportunities, make the most of them, work with zest and zeal, and let the fire out.

Justify that you are the Best. Don't run after anyone, if it’s meant to be, it will be. With the right person,
For the best reason, at the perfect time!

Keep your faith alive, hopes high and fingers crossed, spread love and happiness because this life is too short to cry. Make others happy, but before you do, make sure you yourself are happy. No one said life will be easy, but it'll be completely worth it!

Cherish your memories, be grateful, stay faithful, say the word of truth, don't hurt others and try to understand them. Be kind and God will be kind to you. Remember that every 60 seconds spent upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back so enjoy life. Life is Beautiful!

It just depends on the way you see it. Don't take anyone for granted because somewhere someone is praying for all that you have.

Move on! Look forward to your goals, stay dedicated and be positive. Lastly, remember that one day you'll just be a memory to some people so make sure to be a good one.

The new year, the new me

By: Yumna Sohail

As we bid farewell to the eventful year of 2013, many of us demonstrate the ambition for a better and brighter New Year. People often commit themselves to live up to a new positive set of aims intended to make their lives more stupendous. This secular tradition aiming for self-improvement is given the name of the New Year's Resolution. However as research has been carried out on this widely followed initiative, results show that out of every 100 New Year's Resolutions committed to, 88 fail (University of Britol), despite the firm confidence they are made with. As quoted by Frank Ra in his book 'A Course in Happiness', "Resolutions are more sustainable when shared, both in terms of with whom you share the benefits of your resolution, and with whom you share the path of maintaining your resolution. Peer-support makes a difference in success rate with new year's resolutions". The picture illustrates some of the most popular resolutions, worldwide.

However, sustaining these resolutions is a more complicated task than is thought to be .Why is that so? Well, it is often believed that resolutions need not be kept specifically at the beginning of a New Year. If one has to change themselves, then why wait for the New Year? Why not now? On the other hand, others believe that the New Year is a time for a new beginning not only on their calenders , but for their not so ideal lives. So how to make sure that resolutions made are pursued as well? To begin with, there are three important characteristics that resolutions should be made according to in order to have a genuine basis for longevity.
  1. Realistic: The resolution should be practical and attainable. Hence, a resolution such as flying to the moon or earning millions of dollars could never be seriously pursued.
  2. Measurable: The possibility of determining for a fact that the resolution is being fulfilled in specific measurable data.
  3. Challenging: New Year's is a time to ameliorate old habits and achieve new goals. Hence, although resolutions should be attainable, they should not be too easy to accomplish. They should be somewhat challenging so as to give the individual a sense of achievement and satisfaction. For instance, enlarging one's social circle may be a good resolution. However, maintaining that circle till the end of the year seems like a better resolution since it is quite challenging.
The New Year is a time for analysing the past and looking forward to a better future. It is a time to reflect on the changes we want in ourselves, and to work for their fulfilment. Only when we recognize the need for improvement and aim for it will we be able to achieve it. So what are you waiting for? Now is the time to reflect, to analyse and to conceive for a better self and, therefore, a better tomorrow. Take some austere measures now and try to bring about a new you this New Year!
